The Under 23 team made it two wins in two games with victory over Midhurst & Easebourne last Thursday but they made hard work of it against a hard-working Midhurst side who’ve had a mixed start to life in the West Division with an impressive win over Horsham YMCA followed a week later by a mauling at Hassocks.
In the first half Heath created a hatful of chances kicking down the slope but the magnetic force field in front of the Midhurst goal deflected all shots wide of the post or over the top and when the Bears did get shots on target they were blocked by some excellent defensive play but despite the pressure the Midhurst keeper hardly had a save to make; in fact the best save of the half was made by Conor Evento minutes before the break to deny the Stags from taking a half-time lead.
The second period was a far more even affair with the home-side players using the slope to their advantage and playing long diagonal balls to their speedy forwards but the Heath defence marshalled by the impressive Kyle Sim held firm.
The winning goal was scored in the 68th minute, Heath won a corner on the right which was crossed into the area where SIM rose like a kipper to power a header into the back of the Midhurst goal.
Graham Shergold introduced all five of his substitutes in the second period and the team did lose some of their momentum as the Midhurst players pushed forward in search of the equaliser but the Bears held out to record their second victory of the season.
No game next week but the following Thursday we have a local derby when Horsham YMCA U23 visit the Leisure Centre. Kick Off 7.45
