In their last match our Under 23 team travelled to Peacehaven for a County Cup match against hosts Rottingdean Under 23s.
The home side started well with a gale-force wind on their backs and almost took the lead in the first minute when a long punt forward, a familiar theme for the evening, caused problems in the Heath defence and ended with the ball hitting the crossbar before going out for a corner. The early pressure continued and the opening goal followed on 10 minutes when Connor Spicer gave his team an early lead and that score was doubled 12 minutes later when Spicer made it 2-0 to Rottingdean.
Conditions were very difficult for the Heath players struggling against the wind but gradually they got into the game and played some good passing football and it remained 2-0 at the break.
George Gomez, back from a short spell with Roffey, pulled a goal back on 52 minutes with a right foot shot from 20 yards that nestled into the far side of the net and then things swung in Heath’s favour when the host’s defender Bradley Wort was shown a straight red card for manhandling Lagin Riecker.
With the man advantage and wind on their backs it was now Heath’s turn to dominate possession and it looked only a matter of time before the Bears would draw level but with 10 minutes remaining Harry Balfour was harshly judged to have elbowed a Rotttingdean player and despite the Heath players protest it meant both sides were now down to 10.
The hosts finished the game strongly and created several chances but the score remained 2-1 with Rottingdean going through to the quarter-finals.
